Ageing and Algorithms: Navigating the Role of AI in Geriatric Medicine (#1)

Jagdeesh Singh Dhaliwal 1
  1. Monash University, Melbourne

Artificial intelligence (AI) is starting to shape how we care for older adults In this session, Dr Jagdeesh Singh Dhaliwal will explore practical ways AI is being used — and could be better used — to support older adults across different care settings.

Drawing on his action research with TROPHI and Monash University, Dr Dhaliwal will share real-world examples from aged care, showing how AI can improve decision-making, strengthen patient communication, and help deliver more person-centred care.

The session will also address key questions including:

  • How can medical AI improve care for older adults in hospitals and the community?
  • How could geriatricians use AI when caring for patients?
  • How can older adults — with or without cognitive impairment — benefit from AI technologies?

Participants will be encouraged to think critically about how AI can support clinical judgement and compassion.

The session aims to give a balanced, practical view of how AI can help improve outcomes for older adults, while highlighting the need for ethical, fair, and patient-focused approaches when introducing new technologies.
